雖然皮膚可出現各式各樣的囊腫，但這些病灶通常最後證實本質上為表皮樣（漏斗部）(epidermoid (infundibular))、毛根鞘 (trichilemmal) 或腺性 (glandular) 囊腫 (表 34.1)。有時很難判定某一結構究竟是真性囊腫、竇道 (sinus)、粉刺 (comedone)，或是斜切的擴張毛囊。通常臨床資訊或進一步的切片可提供答案，但仍應時刻將其他可能性納入考量。多數皮膚囊腫在臨床上即可辨識為囊腫。然而，仍有相當比例的誤診情形發生；因此，建議所有病灶皆送交組織學確認。1,2
