Spindled cells

Spindled cells

The spindled cell variant is characterized by cells with elongated, narrow, tapering, cytoplasmic processes, which in nonpigmented variants may be confused with cells of mesenchymal derivation and therefore misdiagnosed as a variety of soft tissue neoplasms.

Occasional melanomas are exceedingly pleomorphic, containing tumor giant cells with enlarged nucleoli and conspicuous, frequently abnormal, mitotic figures; these variants must sometimes be distinguished from

metastatic tumors, including pleomorphic secondary carcinoma, sarcomas, and even anaplastic CD30+ anaplastic large cell lymphoma (Figs 26.40โ€“26.42).
