Histologic features In addition to solar elastosis, the epidermis is often atrophic and flattened with hyperkeratosis. In the dermis, the superficial vessels are usually ectatic with a minimal to mild perivascular lymphocytic infiltrate in association with melanophages.3,9 Hydropic degeneration of the basal layer and follicular plugging is variably present.9 In most biopsies, however, the changes are often mild and non-specific and do not seem to correlate well with the degree of clinical involvement.
