Xanthoma
Xanthoma
Clinical features Xanthoma is very rare in the conjunctiva. It appears as a yellow, subepithelial, smooth epibulbar nodule adherent to the underlying sclera. It may be bilateral in patients with xanthoma disseminatum, a nonhereditary condition in adults characterized by widespread xanthomas of skin and mucous membranes and normal serum lipoprotein studies.1
Histologic features Xanthoma is composed of foamy histiocytes with scattered Touton giant cells. In xanthoma disseminatum, the lesion may be microscopically indistinguishable from xanthogranuloma.
