Histologic variants of melanoma

Histologic variants of melanoma

Quite a range of histologic variants have been described.1โ€“3 With the exception of desmoplastic melanoma, these are of limited prognostic significance but are of importance because they may easily be mistaken for other tumors, with potentially serious consequences. In addition, some of the types are more or less likely to have mutations such as BRAF V600E that represent a therapeutic target, though the genotype histology correlation is not enough for treatment in most cases and direct molecular testing is required.4,5
